THE STORY BEYOND THE SONG:

​

"Lavender Honey" is a celebration of young love and queer awakening, set in a reimagined 1950s world. Here, the roadside diner, barn dance, and the general store are fun, welcoming, safe spaces for a budding sapphic romance. 

​

This song has been a big part of my coming out publicly, as a late-bloomer lesbian. As a teen in a homophobic religious community, I didn't have the opportunity to explore my queerness. It was much later (In my 30s) when I finally accepted my true self and began living authentically as a boldly queer person. 

​

The world of country music has, historically, been unsafe and unwelcoming to queer folks. It's still often perceived as a conservative genre. This is changing slowly. Artists like Brandi Carlisle, Orville Peck, and Allison Russell have been paving the way. Representation is crucial- especially for young queer folks. In sharing "Lavender Honey" with the world, I want to create space for queer stories in the country genre.
